The Goodines had been together for 73 years, always living together, until they were placed in the same nursing home in their old age.
However, they have now been forced to live apart, just before the holiday season.
Herbert Goodine, 91, and Audrey Goodine, 89, who had been married for 69 years, were inseparable for 73 years, sharing not just a life but also a bed.
In their later years, they resided together in a nursing home in New Brunswick.
Separated for Christmas
Shortly before Christmas, the couple received the devastating news that Herbert would be relocated to another facility due to his dementia, marking the first Christmas they will spend apart.
Expressing her dismay, the couple’s daughter shared her distress over the situation.
Hearing mother cry
In a heartfelt Facebook post, their daughter Dianne Goodine recounted a heartbreaking conversation with her parents, where her mother expressed that Christmas would never be the same without her husband, evoking tears from both.
Dianne acknowledged the necessity of specialized care for her father but criticized the decision to separate the couple, particularly during the holiday season.
Shared thousands of times
Despite public outrage and over 18,000 shares of Dianne’s emotional post on Facebook, the government defended its action, emphasizing the priority of individual care over seasonal considerations, as highlighted in a report by CBC News.
Many supporters of the Goodines echoed Dianne’s sentiments, questioning why the couple couldn’t have been allowed to celebrate one last Christmas together.
I understand the need for specialized care for elderly individuals, but was it necessary to separate the couple during the holiday season? Share your thoughts!
