The concept of nursing homes is not terrible in itself. A peaceful place where our elderly – the men and women who helped build our country with their bare hands – get help because they often can no longer take care of themselves.
But sadly, the idea is not always as beautiful in practice. There are still people who abuse their power or authority, and mistreat those who cannot even defend themselves, the elderly whom we love so much.
In this case, an incident took place in a nursing home in Texas. It’s probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen.
Minnie Graham has had a long and happy life. But like many others her age, she reached a point where she could no longer live alone. So her family helped to place her in a nursing home.
She had a large family with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Everyone cared immensely for Minnie, and they visited her often at the home.
Soon, the family began to notice how Minnie started to complain more and more about the staff. She claimed that she was being treated poorly, and even physically abused. And indeed, she had bruises all over her face and body.
The manager justified the wounds by saying that Minnie had fallen out of her wheelchair.
The family, of course, could not believe this. They needed more evidence, and they still hoped that the nurses had good intentions, and that Minnie’s claims were false.
But nothing could prepare them for what they captured on camera.
They saw two nurses beating and kicking Minnie, who was helpless and screaming in pain. They forcefully pushed her out of her wheelchair. After washing Minnie’s body, they stuffed the used washcloths into the mouth of the 98-year-old woman.
These gruesome ‘people’, if you can even call them that, then continued to beat the defenseless elderly woman.
The shocked family immediately contacted the police. The nurses were dismissed from the nursing home, but sickeningly enough, they both could retain their certificates so they could possibly find work again later.
It is absolutely sickening that this could happen. I can’t even imagine how devastated I would be if this happened to my mother. I couldn’t vouch for the consequences.

Although this story is horrifying and tragic, hopefully it will bring enough attention to how our elderly are sometimes treated.
Now we all must help to share this message, to bring attention to the situation and to put an end once and for all to situations like these. So much more can be done to give our elderly a good last time!
