We may want to believe in the fairness of our legal system, but there are times when the court’s decisions can truly shock and dismay us. The case of Christopher Mirasolo is a prime example of this.
Christopher Mirasolo, aged 27, committed the heinous act of raping a 12-year-old girl, which led to her becoming pregnant.
Years later, a court made a controversial ruling granting Christopher joint custody of the child.
Back in 2008, the incident occurred when a 12-year-old girl and her 13-year-old sister ventured out of their home in Sanilac County, Michigan to meet two older boys, one of whom was Christopher Mirasolo, then 18 years old.
The girls were deceived by the boys who confiscated their phones and took them to an abandoned house instead of heading to McDonald’s as promised. Christopher held the girls captive for two days, as detailed in a report by the Daily Mail.
The Verdict
Tragically, within that house, Christopher committed the abhorrent act of raping the 12-year-old girl. Following their release, he threatened the girls with dire consequences if they reported the incident.
Despite the threats, Christopher was apprehended and served a year in prison for his crime. It was during this time that it was discovered that the girl had conceived a child as a result of the assault.
Christopher was incarcerated, but his release came early after just six months on the pretext of caring for his ailing mother.
Joint Custody
In 2010, Christopher faced fresh charges, this time for another offense involving a minor.
Although he is now a free man, the child of his initial victim is an 8-year-old boy. Following a DNA test confirming his paternity, the court controversially ruled that Christopher should have shared custody with his rape victim.
Expressing her dismay, Rebecca Kiessling, the victim’s attorney, commented to the Daily Mail, “It’s been mishandled from the beginning. He was never properly prosecuted and should be behind bars, but the system has failed my client, who was just a child when this all transpired.”
