Final Serenade: Wife Plays Wedding Song for Dying Husband via Video Call
One of the hardest things about the coronavirus…
One of the hardest things about the coronavirus is perhaps the strict isolation that everyone must now adhere to.
We need to keep at least 1.5 meters apart from each other when we go outside. When we get sick, we must isolate ourselves from our family members. And the worst rule of all is that if we end up in the hospital, no one is allowed to visit us to prevent further infection.
On Saint Patrick’s Day, Joe Lewinger began showing COVID-19 symptoms. After two weeks in the hospital, the man unfortunately passed away.
His wife, Maura, was not allowed to be present at his bedside, but the doctors allowed her to FaceTime with her sick husband. (FaceTime is a video call via the phone).

Joe’s Last Moments
As Joe’s condition worsened, Maura wanted to have one last video call with her husband, on her smartphone.
“I saw him and begged him not to leave me. I told him that we need him,” she says.
While the doctors tried to keep him alive, Maura, along with their three children, watched Joe, and listened, overcome with emotions, to the wedding song.
Later on, Joe’s doctor called Maura back with bad news.
“We tried everything to save him, but I’m afraid he won’t make it,” the doctor told a distraught Maura.

Maura wanted to quickly see Joe’s face one last time on the phone.
“I thanked him for being the best husband, and for loving me,” she said. Maura played the wedding song and moments later received the sad news that Joe had passed away.
As they mourn their deceased husband and father, the family emphasizes the importance of staying home. Not only to protect yourself but also to protect others.
Rest in peace, Joe.
“People are not cautious enough. People feel invincible and think it won’t happen to them,” she said. “You just can’t be with other people at home. No matter how lonely and sad it is to be home alone, it’s necessary. Stay home with the people you live with.”
What a heartbreaking story. When will people understand the importance of ALL of us staying home? No one is invincible.
