Robert Redford found solace with his family following the passing of his son, James, who battled cancer.
Filmmaker James Redford passed away in 2020 at 58 due to bile duct and liver cancer.
A spokesperson for Robert Redford shared with PEOPLE during that time that the actor “…is mourning with his family at this challenging time and requests privacy.”
The immense pain of losing a child
“The immense pain of losing a child is immeasurable,” the spokesperson reiterated.
James, also known as Jamie, was a beloved son, husband, and father. His memory lives on through his children, artistic works, filmmaking, and ardent commitment to nature conservation and the environment.
His wife, Kyle, revealed to The Salt Lake Tribune that James’ cancer was discovered while awaiting a liver transplant following a recurrence of his liver ailment from a few years before.
After the events, Kyle tweeted, “Jamie passed away today. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be greatly missed. As his wife of 32 years, I am most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I do not know what we would have done without them these past 2 years.”
Long-standing health challenges
Reportedly, James, who struggled with health problems since childhood, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the liver, as per his IMDb page.
In 1993, he underwent two liver transplants and later established the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, a non-profit aiming to educate the public about organ and tissue donation.
James, the third child of Robert Redford, is survived by his wife Kyle and their children, Dylan and Lena.
