Having a dog at home comes with the inevitable realization that their time with us is limited, typically spanning around 12 to 14 years—making every moment precious.
However, some dogs defy the odds and live longer, like August, a remarkable Golden Retriever who recently marked his 20th birthday.
What sets August apart is that he has now earned the title of the oldest Golden Retriever in recorded history.
August’s journey began on April 24, 2000. After having two previous owners, he finally found his forever home at the age of 14 when Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt from Tennessee welcomed him into their family.
Typically, Golden Retrievers have a life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years, so August was already considered quite senior. Fortunately, the Hetterscheidt family had a special affinity for caring for elderly dogs.
Little did they know that August would defy the odds and live well beyond their expectations.
August shares his home with three Golden Retriever siblings. Despite their advancing age and health challenges, including kidney issues, they remain “surprisingly healthy” and enjoy daily strolls.
On his 20th birthday in April, August enjoyed a celebratory party at home with his family, complete with a carrot cake.
What August probably didn’t realize is that he broke records by surpassing the age of 20, becoming the oldest Golden Retriever on record, exceeding the breed’s average life expectancy by almost double. Truly an inspirational canine!
