A Father’s Love: Sylvester Stallone Refuses to Send Autistic Son to Facility, Chooses to Care for Him Instead

The well-known actor Sylvester Stallone faced challenges as a father, with the loss of his son Sage to heart disease at the age of 36 in 2021.

Initial speculation suggested drug involvement, but the coroner later confirmed that Sage’s passing was due to a heart condition.

Sage and his father had a strained relationship, with Sage moving away from his father’s lifestyle. As he matured, Sage became more introverted, changed his diet to more junk food, and spent less time in the gym compared to his action-star father.

Stallone appealed for respect and peace from the public following his son’s death, expressing:

“When a parent loses a child, there is no greater pain. That is why I beg of people to respect the memory of my miraculously talented son and have sympathy for his loving mother, Sasha, as this painful loss will stay with us for the rest of our lives.”

Before this tragedy, Stallone also faced the autism diagnosis of his son Seargeoh. In a 1990 appearance on “The Arsenio Hall Show,” he tearfully shared the impact of learning about Seargeoh’s autism:

“That was tough. That was really a terrible situation, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt that kind of pain since.”

At three years old, Seargeoh received the diagnosis while Stallone was still married to his first wife, Sasha Czack, mother of both Sage and Seargeoh. Initially described as a “quiet genius” for his early writing, drawing, and advanced language skills, concerns over his communication led to the autism diagnosis.

Diagnosis: Autism Spectrum

Autism primarily impacts social and communication abilities. While familiarity with autism has increased, misconceptions persist. Seargeoh, for instance, does not display the aggression often depicted inaccurately in media. Autism has no cure, but individuals learn to manage its challenges.

Home Care

Upon Seargeoh’s diagnosis, professionals suggested an institution, a choice rejected by Stallone and Czack, who opted for in-home care.

Despite their 1985 divorce after 11 years of marriage, both parents remained dedicated to Seargeoh’s well-being. He received education at home combined with therapy, resulting in significant advancements in speech and mobility by age 10.

Despite his work commitments, Stallone devoted substantial time to playing with his son, transforming their backyard into a natural play area to engage Seargeoh. Additionally, the couple contributed financially toward autism research, establishing a fund supported by Stallone’s film earnings and his ex-wife’s efforts to assist Seargeoh and others on the autism spectrum.
