There are many interesting animals and species. It is also important that we respect them and take good care of them.
Many people are familiar with common pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and farm animals. However, in this case, let’s explore a lesser-known animal.
Instagram user fuzzyfawnwildlife educates us on what to do if we encounter a small orphaned animal in the wild. They specialize in rescuing, caring for, and releasing injured or orphaned deer back into their natural habitat.
“Often, when people seek help, we advise them to leave the babies to give the mother a chance to retrieve them,” they share on Instagram.
However, they had a unique encounter this spring.
3 newborn flying squirrels
The owner contacted them after attempting to reunite the babies with their mother, who had been absent for 24 hours. These three newborns are flying squirrels. They are fragile creatures that cannot survive alone for long. Being tiny and vulnerable, they quickly dehydrate, their body temperature drops, and they need immediate assistance if the mother does not return within hours, according to Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife.
Flying squirrels are native to southern and western Finland, the Baltic states, parts of Asia, and another variant exists in North America.
It is advised not to feed them but keep them warm without direct contact until professional help arrives. Unfortunately, none of these three newborns survived, as they only weighed 3-4 grams.
This is what a flying squirrel looks like
The organization urges people encountering vulnerable animals like these to seek assistance from wildlife organizations and authorities equipped to handle such cases.

An adult flying squirrel has a silver-gray top and a mostly white underbelly. They possess a skin fold between their front and back legs that aids in gliding through the air. With large black eyes, they grow to about 13.5-20.5 cm in length (excluding a 9-14 cm tail) and weigh approximately 95-170 grams.

While it’s unfortunate the three newborns couldn’t be saved, it’s crucial to raise awareness and involve authorities knowledgeable in wildlife rescue.
