Brave Man Battles Wild Bear to Protect His Teckels: ‘I Did it for My Dog’

Dogs are known for their protective instincts and unwavering loyalty to their owners, willing to put themselves in harm’s way to keep them safe.

Many heartwarming stories have emerged in recent years showcasing pets bravely confronting dangerous wild animals to shield their human companions.

However, the bond goes both ways, with pet owners going to great lengths to protect their furry friends. One such incredible act occurred when a man courageously stood up to a wild bear to rescue his two dogs, a moment captured on video.

Walt Hickox, residing in Daytona Beach, Florida, is the proud owner of three dachshunds named Pickles, Pepper, and Piper. One day, while the dogs were on the porch, Walt was alarmed to see an unexpected visitor following them.

A black bear barged in through the back door and started chasing the dachshunds. Alert and instinctive, Walt immediately sprang into action to shield his dogs, even if it meant confronting the bear head-on.

In a daring move, he shouted and pushed the bear in an attempt to steer it away from the house and divert its attention from the dogs.

“The focus was between the bear’s eyes and my dog,” recounted Walt in an interview with Inside Edition. “I wanted to break that focus, bring my body in there to let the dog go back into the house.”

“I wanted to distract the dog’s attention long enough to make it realize: ‘Hmm, there’s also a human here,’” he explained to WESH. “I clapped loudly and yelled.”
