Beirut is in ruins, suffering, and death after the dramatic explosion last week. An enormous part of the city has been devastated.
The exact numbers are not yet known, but more than 100 people have died and there are more than 5000 injured. The explosion occurred due to explosive material stored unsafely in the port.
The blast destroyed homes, shops, and everything within a 10-kilometer radius.
But amidst the chaos and despair, there is also a positive story to tell. That of a photo showing a nurse safely cradling three newborn babies in her arms.
The man who took the photo, photographer Bilal Marie Jawich, praised the heroic nurse. He said that in his 16-year career, he had never experienced anything like this before.
“Before the building, I noticed this hero, who amidst all the chaos and despair, held three newborn babies in her arms, surrounded by dozens of bodies and wounded.”
Lebanese president Michel Aoun says the explosion was caused by over 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate, most likely stored by the government.
An investigation into the cause of the explosion has been initiated. The government is determined to find out how such extremely dangerous material was stored for six years without any precautions.
The president promised the Lebanese citizens to find those responsible. “I promise you that this catastrophe will not go unpunished,” he said.
Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in the Beirut explosion, but we send our thoughts and prayers to the injured and affected.
