Briljante reactie op bodyshamers: vrouw wint duizenden harten

When Julie Ransby was sunbathing in her bikini in the southwest of Denmark, she suddenly overheard two men making derogatory comments about her appearance and choice of attire. These comments were far from kind. They expressed the opinion that someone who “looked like her” should not be seen in a bikini.

Stunned by what she heard, Julie wanted to respond, but the two individuals had already left. So, she took to Facebook to pen an open letter.

Julie Ransby didn’t have much to say to those individuals. However, she made a crucial point about everyone’s right to express themselves through appearance and clothing choices.

Her Facebook post garnered over 20,000 shares and more than 100,000 likes. Read her powerful message below:

“I have a story to share, it’s lengthy but I hope you will read it. I’m furious, shocked, and bewildered.”

While sunbathing in a bikini with music in my ears, my Spotify suddenly stopped. I unintentionally overheard a conversation between two young men behind me. Unaware that I could hear them, they remarked, “I don’t understand why you wear a bikini when you look like that. Really not nice.” They chuckled and walked away before I could respond. Hence, I’m penning this in the hope that those two individuals stumble upon this message.

Listen closely. Women come in all shapes and sizes with hips, breasts, thighs, and arms. Be it weighing 58 kg or otherwise, it is entirely normal to don a bikini in 25-degree weather. It’s astonishing how some people, both men and women, possess such a skewed perception of when a woman is permitted to wear a bikini and when she isn’t. The notion that a bikini body is only acceptable for those who are slender and bronzed…

Let me make this clear. If I choose to wear a bikini showcasing my ample thighs, arms, and petite belly, no one has the authority to dictate otherwise. If I wish to dance in the town square flaunting my lovely chest and behind akin to Justin Timberlake, then I shall!

A bikini body is a body adorned in a bikini, irrespective of size, shape, or body fat percentage. Just because I don’t conform to model-like dimensions (and never will), it doesn’t diminish my right to bask in the sun in my bikini. It’s acceptable if you don’t find me aesthetically pleasing, but asserting that I shouldn’t wear one unless resembling Jessica Alba crosses a line. To challenge this, take a look at this photo of me in a bikini.”
