One day, as Steve Knoop and his friend were driving through the forest, they spotted something unusual on the road ahead. Intrigued, they slowed down to investigate and were astonished by what they discovered.
In the middle of the road lay a baby deer, unable to move and in a peculiar position. Concerned that the fawn might be hurt, the men knew they had to take action promptly.
What followed next was truly remarkable.
The fawn had collapsed, its body twisted unnaturally. Uncertain of what to do, the men understood they had to act fast to help the distressed animal.
Steve approached the deer while his friend filmed the whole incident. Upon closer inspection, they noticed the fawn was still alive. Without any visible injuries, Steve decided to lift the deer off the road.
During the attempt to move the deer, a miracle unfolded. Steve’s quick thinking and actions earned him the title of an animal hero, as he saved the young deer’s life.
Once off the road, the fawn began moving its legs again, eventually standing up and swiftly bounding back into the safety of the forest.
Steve’s intervention not only saved the fawn from potential harm by predators or passing vehicles but also ensured it reunites with its mother, as human scent can sometimes lead to rejection by deer mothers.
Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends that when rescuing a deer, rubbing a towel on grass and then on the deer can help mask human scent.
Steve’s actions were crucial in ensuring the fawn’s safety and motivating it to leave the danger of the road behind.
