Thanksgiving, the significant celebration in the United States, has passed, marking the official start of the Christmas season. Despite the ongoing pandemic, people are joyfully decorating and embracing the festive spirit.
Reindeer are a common symbol of the holidays, famously pulling Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. Besides their mythical role, reindeer are real animals capable of impressive feats.
Recently, a pair of rare newborn reindeer are capturing hearts this Christmas season, defying all odds.
Williams Reindeer Farm, located near Anchorage, Alaska, has been breeding reindeer for over three decades. However, they had never encountered reindeer like Spicy and Spike before.
When mama reindeer Sugar Mama gave birth to twin calves earlier this year, it was a worrisome moment for the farm owners. Twin births are uncommon in reindeer, and the survival of both newborns is highly improbable.
“Typically, one of the twins or the mother doesn’t survive, which is often the case with twins,” explained farm owner Lauren Waite in an interview with KTUU. “Reindeer are not designed for twin births.”
Against all expectations, Spicy and Spike both thrived, marking a first for the farm. Lauren shared, “We’ve had twins previously, but none of them survived beyond 24 hours.”
“The twins are incredibly special,” she added.
Despite their miraculous survival, the twins had to be separated after birth. Given the rarity of twin survival, new mom Sugar Mama found it challenging to raise both calves simultaneously.
Therefore, the decision was made to raise the twins separately, with Sugar Mama nurturing Spicy while Spike received bottle feeding.
Updating the community, the farm posted on Facebook that Sugar Mama was excelling in caring for her babies, with both twins growing “healthy and thriving.”
Several months have passed, and after the weaning process, the twins were joyfully reunited.
Despite being raised separately initially, they still share a remarkable “twin bond.”
“They are now in the same enclosure, and they frequently seek each other out,” Lauren shared with KTUU. “I believe it’s that twin telepathy at work.”
We are thrilled that both Spicy and Spike have not only survived but are flourishing. Their reunion as best friends is a heartwarming miracle just in time for the holiday season!
