DIY Handgel: How to Make Your Own When Supplies Run Out
The Method to Make Your Own Hand Gel
The widespread panic caused by the coronavirus has resulted in certain products becoming almost unavailable.
This panic has led people to stock up on items such as toilet paper. But also products that keep bacteria away, like antibacterial hand gel, are harder to find.
It’s no surprise that the demand for hand gel is huge.
Washing our hands remains the most effective way to combat bacteria, but we can’t always have soap and water on hand. That’s why it is recommended to carry a bottle of hand gel. But that’s easier said than done.

In New York, the city overwhelmed by the coronavirus, they have even enlisted the help of prisons to produce their own hand gel. They sell it at a reasonable price of about 5 euros. This was reported by CNN.
Making your own hand gel is easier than you think, with just 3 required ingredients. This is what you need:
- 99% disinfecting alcohol
- Aloe vera gel
- Essential oils (optional)
You also need something to put the potion in, like a glass bottle or jar that you have cleaned thoroughly beforehand.
Here’s how to make it:
- Fill a glass bottle with 2/3 disinfecting alcohol
- Use 10 to 15 drops of essential oil per bottle. I used tea tree oil and lavender.
- Then fill the bottle with aloe vera gel.
Keep in mind that disinfecting alcohol can cause skin irritation, and you should not keep it near your eyes or nose. You can also dilute it if you find it too concentrated.
