Doctor’s Orders: Woman Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands
Taking the Road Less Traveled
Taking difficult decisions is never an easy task. I often struggle with it myself. I weigh the pros and cons until my brain hurts, and eventually end up making the wrong choice.
That being said, I never had to make a decision about life after death, like country legend Randy Travis’s wife was once forced to do.
On a fateful day, in July 2013, Randy suffered a stroke and ended up in a coma.

Doctors said his chances of survival were low, so it made little sense to continue his life-saving treatments.
His wife, Mary Davis Travis, had the option to turn off life support and let her husband slip away. The doctors posed the question directly to her. What did she want to do?

However, she chose to break all the rules. Instead of following the norm and listening to doctors, she chose to do something entirely different.
Experts may have given him a 1 to 2% chance of survival, but Mary knew her husband was a fighter. For her, it was simply not an option to turn off the ventilators.

“I prayed hard,” ‘God, please let me have him back, any way or form,’” May recalled, as reported by USA Today.
Randy remained in a coma, in a bed of wires, but Mary never considered pulling the plug on his machines.

Then one day, the miracle presented itself. Randy woke up.
However, although he survived, the musician was not the same. Both his speech and ability to move were affected, and he was forced to undergo extensive rehabilitation to improve his condition.
In a typical fashion, neither he nor Mary gave up. Four years after his battle with death, and with exhaustive efforts to recover, Randy finally stepped onto the stage to sing again.
