Many people find pigeons unappealing. The gray birds are everywhere, especially in big cities. They are also sometimes called “rats with wings.”
But recently, a much more beautiful species of pigeon was discovered, with a very exotic color palette.
This is the “pink-necked green pigeon,” also known as the “rainbow pigeon” or “hot pigeon” on the internet.

It’s hard to believe it’s the same species as the typical gray pigeons we know. With its distinctive color palette, this pigeon is a favorite among bird enthusiasts.
The bird became very popular on Twitter when someone shared photos of the colorful pigeon.
“Have you ever seen such a beautiful pigeon?” someone wrote. The answer, for many, was “no.”
The photos are so atypical of how we know pigeons that people don’t believe if the photos were real. Someone jokingly said the pigeon looked like a “seagull covered in curry.”
But the photos of the pink-necked green pigeon are indeed real and were not edited.
Unfortunately, there are not many of these pigeons to be found in our Western world. They mainly live in countries in Southeast Asia such as Myanmar, The Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
The colorful pigeons mainly eat fruits and figs, and in turn, help plant seeds in their environment.

When people on Twitter went crazy about the ‘rainbow pigeon,’ bird enthusiasts started to join in the fascination for the bird.
Another person compared the bird to a colorful pigeon from Australia, the pink-headed fruit dove.
Rosemary Mosco, the author of a book about pigeons, was asked for her opinion on the colorful pigeon. She mentioned that if you look closely at the typical gray pigeons, these types also often have a rich color palette.
“They have their own rainbow colors,” writes Rosemary. “They can be red, brown, gray, white, or black,” as they are descendants of domesticated pets.
Who knew that such colorful pigeons existed in the world? Let’s share this story about these unique birds!
