Farewell to a Musical Legacy: Remembering Rosmarie Trapp, the Eldest Daughter of ‘The Sound of Music’ Family

Rosmarie Trapp, the eldest daughter of Georg von Trapp and Maria Augusta Kutschera, whose musical family inspired the famous Broadway musical and film, The Sound of Music, has passed away at the age of 93.

As mentioned in the obituary, Rosmarie peacefully passed away on May 13, surrounded by loved ones in a nursing home in Vermont.

She was born on February 8, 1929, in a village near Salzburg, Austria, and grew up in a large family, with seven older half-siblings and two younger siblings.

Rosmarie spent her early years in Austria until 1938 when her family emigrated to the United States to avoid the German occupation of Austria and resist pressure to collaborate with the Nazis.

After settling in Pennsylvania, the family moved to Stowe, Vermont, where they gained recognition as the Trapp Family Singers and later established the Trapp Family Lodge in 1950.

The Von Trapp family’s story was immortalized in the famous 1959 Broadway musical and the 1965 film The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Following her time at the family inn, Rosmarie spent five years in Papua, New Guinea, with her sister Maria, serving as a missionary and teacher. She also engaged in volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel.

Upon returning to Vermont, she actively participated in her community by knitting for others, organizing singing events, and owning several thrift stores.

Known for her community involvement, Rosmarie also enjoyed supporting others and savoring Von Trapp Helles, a local beer from her brother Johannes’ brewery.

In a statement from Johannes, Lynne, Kristina, and Sam von Trapp, the family requested privacy to mourn Rosmarie’s passing. They remembered her for her kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit, noting her positive impact on numerous lives.

“We believe that the best way to honor Rosmarie is to demonstrate the same selfless kindness and generosity that she exemplified every day,” part of the statement from the Von Trapps expressed.

Her brother Johannes von Trapp is now the sole surviving member of the Trapp Family Singers.

What an extraordinary life she led! Let’s keep the Von Trapp family in our thoughts during this challenging period.
