Food Authority Warns: Salmonella Found in ALDI Cervelat Sausages

Salmonella is a bacterium that lives in the intestines of animals. Especially chickens and pigs are affected by it, says Gezondheidsnet.

If you get infected with the bacterium through, for example, eggs or pork, it can cause unpleasant symptoms. If you’re ‘lucky’, it will result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, and/or fever.

If you’re extremely unlucky, and the bacterium reaches your bloodstream, it can lead to inflammations and in some cases even heart problems.

Some people are more susceptible to the bacterium and the subsequent illness can be more severe:

  • young children
  • pregnant women
  • people with weak immune systems
  • elderly individuals

ALDI recalls cervelaat

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) issued a warning yesterday regarding possible contamination with the salmonella bacterium. This is due to a detected source of contamination at a pig slaughterhouse.

The cervelaat sausage from ALDI comes from this slaughterhouse and should absolutely not be consumed.

Specifically, the following products are affected:

  • Alsatian- or peppercervelaat 150 grams (1.59 euros)
  • Expiry dates 26-11-2018 to 07-01-2019

ALDI requests customers to return these items, whether opened or unopened, to one of the stores. The purchase amount will be refunded.
