The couple Beth and Michael Clark, known for their generosity in donating blankets to shelters, unexpectedly found a new member for their family during a visit to an animal shelter in December 2015.
The couple was captivated by a 17-year-old dog named Rocky and decided to bring him home. Beth shared, “I saw an old skinny dog with a gray coat and said to my husband ‘We have to take him.’ I couldn’t just let that poor old guy die in a cage.”
According to Beth, Rocky became an integral part of their lives. He loved spending time with them, even as he aged and faced mobility challenges. Their routines changed to accommodate Rocky’s needs, from being carried up the stairs to enjoying sunny days together instead of going for walks.
“Rocky completed our life,” Beth expressed to TODAY. “He loved to dance with us and hang around us.”
Special families open their hearts to older dogs
Robin Catlett, from the Anne Arundel animal shelter, noted the growing trend of families welcoming older dogs into their homes. She emphasized the importance of providing comfort and care to these senior pets.
As Beth’s pregnancy progressed, Rocky’s bond with her strengthened, becoming a source of support for the expectant mother.
Rocky’s health declined
Despite the joy of Beth’s pregnancy, Rocky’s health took a turn for the worse when he was diagnosed with a tumor at 7 months pregnant.
On the day their daughter was born, Rocky showed his love by laying next to the baby, but his illness was too severe. The Clarks made the difficult decision to let him go peacefully.
“We loved him more than we can describe, and his loss weighs very heavy on us,” Beth shared with Today.
The family believes that Rocky held on until his little sister was born to meet her, finding comfort in knowing he completed his role before saying goodbye.
Beth and Michael, your compassion and love for Rocky are truly remarkable. Thank you for giving him a happy home in his final years.
