An abandoned dog was found chained in Ukraine.
Now he needs to go to the vet.
Almost four months have passed since Russia invaded neighbor Ukraine and started a war. In the midst of this turmoil, many people have fled the country, leaving behind their beloved pets.
One such heart-wrenching case is that of this adorable dog.
Discovered chained and deserted by compassionate animal lovers, a video from the YouTube channel Love Furry Friends captures the rescue.
Hungry since being chained
The footage shows two women making eye contact with the emaciated dog, a clear sign that he has gone without food for a long time.
Offered a can of food, the dog eagerly devours it, revealing his protruding ribs, a result of prolonged hunger.
His fur bears the marks of the chain that once bound him around the neck.
The dog, known as Toby, has received medical attention at a vet clinic where necessary evaluations and treatments were carried out. Efforts are now underway to find a loving family for this Ukrainian cutie, with hopes that he will soon find a forever home!
New regulations for pets in the EU post-Ukraine war
Many pets managed to escape Ukraine alongside their owners as the conflict unfolded. Subsequently, the European Commission implemented relaxed regulations in the spring to facilitate the relocation of companion animals to EU member countries. However, authorities caution about the differing health situations between pets in Ukraine and the EU, particularly regarding diseases like rabies.
In Sweden, a country akin to the Netherlands, measures are being taken proactively. The Swedish Board of Agriculture has detailed the scenario on its official website, emphasizing the assessment of risks posed by pets from Ukraine on a case-by-case basis.
Addressing the situation, the Swedish Board of Agriculture stated, “Exceptional rules are currently in place for dogs and cats accompanying their fleeing owners from Ukraine. Evaluation focuses on managing the risk of rabies to safeguard public and animal health in Sweden. Ukraine is classified as a high-risk rabies country with reported cases in both dogs and cats annually.”
Let’s hope that this charming dog finds a new loving home soon! Feel free to share this heartwarming story!
