After 13 years and 81 episodes of Midsomer Murders, actor John Nettles concluded his role as police officer Tom Barnaby.
His “cousin,” John Barnaby, took over his role in the series.
Now, 10 years later, let’s see what John Nettles has been up to.
“Midsomer Murders” was a globally acclaimed series, captivating audiences worldwide, including in the Netherlands and Flanders.
In the quaint village of Midsomer, numerous murders occurred, drawing in television viewers who followed the investigations of police officer Tom Barnaby and his partner Ben Jones.
The series gained immense popularity over the years, but to the dismay of fans, actor John Nettles bid farewell to the show in 2009.

Departing the Series After 13 Years
In 2010, the final episode with John was filmed, marking the end of his 13-year tenure on the show, symbolically handing in his police badge.
“It’s the end of an era for me. It was sorrowful to part with my police badge. Having solved 200 murder cases, I believe I’ve accomplished my objectives. Real officers would commend me,” John Nettles shared with Daily Mail.
It was when a colleague departed the series that John recognized it was time for his exit.
“It suddenly struck me that I would be the eldest officer on the show once David Jason left. However, it was a tough choice. After 13 years on Midsomer Murders when Barnaby departed, the people I worked with became like family, making it challenging,” expressed John Nettles to Hello Magazine.
Reflections on the Iconic Character
And so, he bid farewell to the series. Some time afterward, he shed light on his departure.
“I veered far from my actual self. Remember, I am an actor, not a law enforcer,” he conveyed to Expressen in 2001.
It has been a decade since his departure from the show. Many changes have unfolded in the actor’s life since then.
Although retirement was on the horizon, it didn’t quite transpire as planned.
His Life a Decade Later
Currently 76 years old, John Nettles has continued to pursue acting in both theatrical productions and films, recently penning a book titled “Jewels and Jackboots.”
He has also made appearances in British nature documentaries such as “Devon and Cornwall.”
“I’ve always been intrigued by dramas, particularly those set in Cornwall, my hometown. The accent naturally resonates with me as I hail from there and now reside nearby. It’s a delightful, warm accent, offering a charming means of expression,” he shared in an interview with Hello Magazine.
It’s wonderful to see you still active in acting, John! Do you miss the Midsomer Murders days? If so, feel free to share your thoughts by spreading the word on Facebook.
