We, true animal lovers, cannot stand by and watch helpless creatures being abused.
It is heartbreaking to see how cruel and heartless people can be to those who just want to be treated with love and care.
When I heard that a poor horse did not get a good start in life, I was immediately shocked and angry.
The poor little foal Barney was found abandoned and emaciated on a pile of garbage.
Animal lovers were notified of his location and immediately started the rescue operation.
Today, Barney is a true beauty.
There are billions of people on this earth and at least as many, if not more, animals on our planet.
Many animals live in the wild, far from any human contact, where they can live their lives entirely in their way.
But then, of course, there are also many animals that spend a large part of their lives close to us humans.
On farms, we can see horses, cows, chickens, and sheep roaming freely. In our homes, we can have animals like cats and dogs as beloved pets.
Yes, for most of us, it is a gift to treat our beloved animals with immense warmth and care.
They give us so much without ever asking for anything in return.
With small gestures, they can be our greatest support when it’s stormy, and when life goes smoothly, they walk by our side – happy for us.
But there are those animals who experience from the very start of their lives how cruel and heartless we humans can be.
The foal Barney was found on a garbage dump
The foal named Barney knows all too well how mean and cold people can be.
When he was abandoned and dumped, he was found cowering on a heap of garbage, writes the British Mirror.
He was only five months old when he was found emaciated and almost dead on a day in December 2022.
Poor Barney had been lying on the garbage dump for so long that his body was covered in cuts and scratches.
Animal lovers from Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Essex, England were quickly called to the scene to help poor Barney.
Some hero had alerted the shelter, and it was really just in time.
Barney was in such a bad condition that the friends from the center shouldn’t have come any later.
The poor foal was so injured and cold that they had to first warm him up.
The animal friends placed several blankets on his wounded, cold body and together they did everything they could to warm Barney up.
After some time, they were able to get him up and into the transport van.
Barney was rushed to the nearest veterinarian where he received the long-awaited care and help he had needed for so long.
“Little Barney was in a very bad condition when he was found, and we were afraid his life would end tragically,” says Jo Franklin of Redwings Horse Sanctuary.
“He was lying upside down on his back in a heap of rubble, partially covered by an old mattress.”
The veterinarians saved Barney’s life
Barney stayed two weeks at the veterinarian before he was strong enough to leave the clinic.
But even though he had received the care that saved his life, not everything was alright.
Barney was so down and sad.
The animal friends did their best every day to cheer him up, but Barney found it difficult to fully trust them.
Granted, they had rescued him from his nightmare, but the wound in his heart from the betrayal of his former owners was not completely healed.
Of course, the animal lovers did not give up.
They knew that Barney needed time and space to feel love again, and realized that they only wished him well.
Injured
Every day they had to prove to him that they would not abandon him – Barney was their friend.
“He had an infected wound on his left hip that required surgery to remove the dead tissue and daily bandages to protect it,” Jo says.
Barney was also extremely skinny.
His little body had endured so much in such a short time.
But time helped.
Week after week, Barney seemed to gain more strength.
The animal friends tended to his bandages and cared for the wounds, which over time began to heal more and more.
And Barney has truly undergone an incredible transformation.

Now, some time after the heartbreaking tragedy, it is actually hard to believe that it is the same horse.
Barney is now a proud foal who loves to show off, side by side with his best friends.

He is fully recovered and seems to really enjoy being outside and getting into mischief with his friends.
