Our pets and farm animals rely on us for care, and it’s heartbreaking when they are denied that care.
An egregious case of neglect involved a horse with severely overgrown hooves.
Concerned animal lovers acted swiftly upon learning the severity of the horse’s condition to save its life.
For genuine animal enthusiasts, showing warmth, love, and respect towards all living beings is a fundamental principle.
Every creature, big or small, has an equal right to coexist peacefully on this planet.
Regrettably, there are times when humans fail to uphold the responsibility of caring for animals, resulting in dire consequences.
Upon arriving at an animal shelter, a neglected Shetland pony had suffered immensely due to its severely overgrown hooves.
Maintaining a horse’s hooves is crucial, as they cannot tend to them on their own.
Owners need to ensure their hooves are clean, trim, and healthy to facilitate movement.
Unfortunately, the neglected pony’s hooves were in a deplorable state, hindering its mobility.
Grotesque long hooves
The pony’s hooves had grown so long that they had curled up by the time it was brought to the shelter.
Reports from on-site personnel indicated that the horse had not received hoof care for a staggering 10 years, as per The Dodo.
Furthermore, the pony had been concealed on the owners’ farm to prevent anyone from discovering its neglect.
The urgency of the situation prompted the owners to relinquish the pony to authorities, who then transferred it to Animaux en Péril (Animals in Peril).
Another horse from the same farm was also rescued from the abusive owners.
Immediate attention was required to address the pony’s severely overgrown hooves.
Neglected for many years
The prolonged suffering of the horse stirred compassion in animal lovers, prompting swift action to assist.
The pony weighed a mere 69 kilograms, far below the normal weight range of 200 kilograms for a Shetland pony.
“In our 24 years of operation, we have never encountered a pony or horse with such excessive hoof growth,” the animal care facility stated.
The horse with the elongated hooves was dubbed Poly, while the other rescued horse was named Everest.
Once the pair had been safely removed from their cruel environment, the rehabilitation process commenced.
Heroic effort of animal lovers
Poly and Everest underwent thorough cleaning and grooming to eradicate lice and dirt from their matted fur.
“The suffering they must have endured—hunger, neglect, and isolation—over the years is unimaginable,” the animal shelter remarked.
After five days of intensive care, Poly and Everest showed signs of recovery.
They were pampered, bathed, and draped with warm blankets.
It’s astounding to witness the transformation of these horses since their rescue from the neglectful owners.
Thanks to the unwavering dedication of animal lovers, Poly and Everest now enjoy freedom and happiness!
