One common concern for new parents is how their dog will react to the new baby. Unfortunately, this worry leads some dogs to be abandoned. However, it’s not unreasonable to hope that your furry pet and human baby can coexist safely and harmoniously.
Most pets adapt well to babies and can even develop strong bonds with them. Even large, seemingly tough dogs can display incredible gentleness and affection towards children.
Take, for example, this heartwarming story of a dog who presented a special gift to his new little human.
Bonnie Michalek, from California (USA), and her husband consider their bullmastiff Brutus as an integral part of the family. They even refer to the dog as their ‘first baby’.
During Bonnie’s pregnancy with her first child, Brutus seemed to sense it before anyone else. Bonnie recalled how the dog became noticeably more protective early on in her pregnancy.
“Brutus knew I was pregnant before I did – he definitely sensed it before I did,” she told The Dodo.
This foresight reassured them that Brutus would warmly welcome the new family member: “He’s always loved children,” Bonnie shared. “Whenever he hears children laughing outside, he gets excited.”
When they introduced baby Kayden to Brutus for the first time, the dog affectionately approached and licked the baby’s face.
Since then, Brutus and Kayden have formed a special bond, with the dog going above and beyond to care for the baby, even by sharing his favorite possession.
Like many dogs, Brutus has a cherished toy – a yellow plush ball that he treasures. “It’s the only toy he doesn’t destroy within five minutes,” Bonnie mentioned to The Dodo.
Despite his attachment to the toy, Brutus willingly gives it up to comfort his beloved little human.
“Every time Kayden cries, Brutus fetches his fluffy ball and tries to bring it to him,” Bonnie shared on Instagram. “So cute.”
This touching gesture truly exemplifies unconditional love.
It’s evident that this dog will be a faithful guardian to his new best friend for a long time.
