A year ago, Buddy, a dog, made headlines after a gruesome fire attack by a child left him with severe head injuries.

Initially, Buddy captured attention when he returned home with severe burns on his face, a result of being intentionally set on fire by a child. The burns were so severe that his eyes swelled shut, causing temporary blindness, and he was even restrained with an extension cord around his neck.
The perpetrator, a child, later confessed to the deliberate act of setting Buddy on fire, but due to Mississippi state law, no legal action could be taken as the individual was under 12 years old.
Given the severity of his injuries, Buddy was transferred to Tunica Humane Society for specialized care. Vets initially expressed concern about his prognosis, emphasizing the long road to recovery ahead.
“The maliciousness of the act is unimaginable,” remarked Sandy Williams, director of Tunica Humane Society, to FOX 13. “Buddy was a gentle and friendly dog who was adored by the local children.”
Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinarian, highlighted Buddy’s stable condition but acknowledged the challenging journey ahead during his treatment at the Tunica Humane Society, as reported by WTVA.
Despite his initial struggles, Buddy’s positive attitude impressed his caregivers as he was moved to a university hospital for advanced treatment.

Months of progress followed, with Buddy eventually undergoing skin grafts to facilitate his healing process and reduce his reliance on bandages.
“With his bandages removed, Buddy’s spirits have lifted significantly. He is happier and more playful, enjoying a return to a more normal life,” detailed the Humane Society in a summer update.

Living with Dr. Swanson in a foster home, Buddy’s progress has been remarkable, with the vet confirming his return to a normal, happy life.
“Buddy has made a complete recovery,” announced the Tunica Humane Society. “He is no longer required to wear an e-collar and is relishing every moment of his ordinary doggie routine of play, walks, and well-deserved pampering!”
