Seeing someone abandon their dog is always heart-wrenching. Instances of pet abandonment can be truly cruel and inhumane.
However, there are times when relinquishing a pet for adoption is a difficult but necessary choice. Caring for animals entails significant costs and responsibilities, which some individuals may no longer be able to manage.
In 2017, a pit bull in a cage was discovered near Harwinton, Connecticut.
Attached to the dog was a note penned by the previous owner, narrating the circumstances:
“My name is Dikkie Dik. I may seem aggressive, but it’s out of fear. I am everything to my owner, who loves me dearly! Unfortunately, my owner, who is homeless and unwell, could no longer care for me. Please don’t judge them. They attempted to take me to a shelter, but I was turned away. I know my owner cares deeply for me; she is the only one who gave me a chance at life.”
“I don’t want to live in a car for two months, and my owner weeps daily, expressing sorrow for leaving me behind. I am fiercely protective of my owner and will bite anyone who poses a threat to her. All my owner wishes for is someone to give me a chance, care for me, and offer love. She is heartbroken, and I am deeply saddened that it came to this. No one was willing to assist.”

Thomas Mitchell from the animal shelter vividly recalls the conversation with the dog’s owner, who was visibly distraught and professed her love for Dikkie Dik.
“She brought him in and drove away. We alerted other shelters that he needed assistance,” Mitchell shared with WFSB.
“I can’t fathom the emotions this woman must have experienced.”
The good news is that Dikkie Dik received the care he needed. Eventually, an organization volunteered to look after him.
“It’s what they do,” Mitchell affirmed. “They assist those in need.”
Despite initial apprehension, Dikkie Dik responded well to training and showed rapid improvement.
“With patience and kindness, Dikkie Dik quickly demonstrated his abilities, sitting down, offering a paw, and more,” the organization shared on Facebook.
And then came the heartwarming conclusion: Dikkie Dik was reunited with his owner!
Dikkie received free care, while the homeless woman secured a job, a new home, and a fresh start!
“Dikkie was reunited with his owner, marking an incredible new chapter for both of them,” the organization documented.
Such a perfect resolution! This story underscores the crucial role of such organizations, benefiting not only the animals but also their devoted owners.
