Many struggle to comprehend the existence of real monsters in our world – those capable of heinous acts such as rape and murder, turning our worst fears into heartbreaking realities.
For many in Chile, such a monster is a 30-year-old man who committed unspeakable crimes against a 1-year-old girl, a tragic case that has deeply shaken the nation.
While many have called for the death penalty for the perpetrator, his sentencing is still pending.
Recently, the doctor who cared for the 1-year-old victim, Ambar Lazcano, expressed his views on why he opposes capital punishment for the man responsible, in a poignant Facebook post.
Dr. Alvaro Retamal, a pediatrician at San Camilo Hospital near Santiago, attended to Ambar Lazcano upon her arrival with severe injuries. Although initially attributed to a fall by the child’s aunt and her partner, the extent of her injuries revealed a far more sinister truth.
Medical examination confirmed that Ambar had been a victim of sexual abuse, a horrific crime that led to her untimely death.
Ambar had been under her aunt’s care due to her mother’s inability to look after her because of drug-related issues.
According to El Comercio, despite another uncle’s offer to care for Ambar, he was rejected by the authorities in Chile due to his sexual orientation.
Tragically, Ambar ended up in a home where she met her tragic fate.
Dr. Retamal shared on Facebook the emotional turmoil of witnessing Ambar’s fight for survival and expressed his opposition to the death penalty for her offender. His heartfelt post, which has garnered immense attention, articulates his sentiments.
Dr. Retamal’s translated message conveys a plea for empathy and protection for all children in the face of such atrocities, highlighting the importance of addressing the root causes rather than seeking vengeance.
Advocating for a society where such atrocities are prevented, the doctor’s message urges a shift from seeking retribution to fostering care and safeguarding all children.
