Many of us put food and drinks in the refrigerator without thinking about the consequences. But careless handling of the refrigerator can actually damage the appliance.
Don’t put glass bottles in the refrigerator door
After a week of grocery shopping, it’s easy to just throw everything that belongs in the refrigerator in there, but the fact is that we need to be a bit more thoughtful.
Overcrowded refrigerator doors are not just an aesthetic problem – they can lead to real issues, as Eating Well and others have noted.
A refrigerator door full of glass bottles and other heavy items can damage the hinges. And what happens then? Well, the door doesn’t close properly, allowing cold air to escape. Your refrigerator then has to work harder to stay at the right temperature, and no one wants a tired and worn-out refrigerator.
Even overloading the shelves can have consequences. If the airflow in the refrigerator is blocked, the temperature becomes uneven and can cause food to spoil prematurely. The compressor also wears out more than usual when overloaded with food and drinks.
So what can you do? Keep the door free of heavy items and don’t fill the shelves with unnecessary stuff. Empty what you don’t need and give your refrigerator a chance to breathe. By thinking twice, you not only extend the life of your appliances but also keep your food fresh longer.
I had no idea about this!
