Love at First Bark: Soldier Falls for Stray Puppy in Iraq, Reunion Brings Overflow of Joy

In 2016, Ken Wyrsch, a former military specialist stationed at a military base in Iraq, formed an unlikely bond with a stray puppy he encountered one day while working.

The puppy, later named Ollie, displayed courage by walking straight to the military post, capturing Ken’s heart along with the other soldiers’ hearts.

Ken took Ollie under his care, providing him with love and nurturing him as his own.

From the moment Ollie arrived at the base, Ken felt a strong connection with the puppy and decided to ensure he had a safe and happy life.

Ollie soon became Ken’s loyal companion, waiting eagerly for him whenever he went on missions, bringing morale and joy to the troops.

Sad Farewell

Unfortunately, the time came for Ken to leave Iraq, forcing a heartbreaking separation between him and Ollie as the base shut down, leaving Ollie homeless on the streets once more.

Concerned for Ollie’s well-being in a country with harsh conditions for strays, Ken was determined not to abandon his faithful companion.

The only right thing

Ken couldn’t bear to leave Ollie behind and reached out to SPCA International for support in bringing Ollie to California, his new home.

Thanks to generous donations, Ollie made his journey to the US in May 2016, marking a new chapter in his life.
