They met last summer in Barcelona, where they both sought shelter in the same hotel after the terrible terrorist attack that killed 13 people. But amid all the shock and horror, two people found each other, Sophie Stevenson and Jesse Mateman.
Sophie and Jesse quickly became friends and in the following days they went to the beach together and spent a nice time together. But soon their friendship developed into something more.
The couple had sex, and when it was time to go home, the two were already in love with each other. At least that’s what Sophie thought.
At the end of their vacation, Sophie Stevenson returned home to Stoke-on-Trent in England, while Jesse Mateman returned home to Amsterdam.
The two stayed in touch every day. Jesse said he wanted to see Sophie again and that he would love to meet her in England.
However, the 21-year-old man changed his mind and invited Sophie to Amsterdam.

Sophie was over the moon. She paid 400 euros to see her new love again. Everything seemed to be going perfectly until Sophie arrived in Amsterdam.
When Sophie arrived at the airport, she realized something was not right. She couldn’t reach Jesse, and after two hours of waiting, she suspected he wouldn’t show up.
Heartbreaking message
Sophie went to her hotel, and six hours after landing, she finally received a message. A message that broke her heart.

It turned out that Sophie had become the victim of a heartless game.
Jesse had sent her a message saying “You’re a pig” and then blocked her on social media.
The cruel ‘joke’ is called “to pull a pig” and is popular among young men. To play the game, boys find a group of women and choose the least attractive one. Then they try to ‘pull’ her, much to the amusement of their friends.

Sophie was devastated and felt absolutely humiliated. She immediately bought a ticket back home, and when she was there, she decided to warn other women. She also went to the media about what had happened.
“Boys and their friends think it’s funny, but they donβt know how frightening and traumatic this is for women. It wasn’t just the deception, but also the shock and confusion. I panicked,” Sophie told ITV.
Terrible joke
“As women, we can’t allow this. That’s why I decided to call him out by name. I was so ashamed, but I thought, ‘if I tell people what he did, the stupid joke he played, maybe he’ll realize how awful it is. I hope other guys will think twice before playing such games with women.”

Jesse Mateman initially claimed that Sophie had made up the whole story and that he hadn’t had sex with her. However, he later changed his story and admitted they had had sex but claimed they hadn’t been in touch after Barcelona.
“Mateman wants to emphasize that the messages published in the media are not from him. If Mateman used the word ‘pig’ in a message to that girl β which he cannot remember β it could only have been sent during his stay in Spain and could only relate to the way they had sex,” the Dutchman’s lawyer said in a statement to Daily Mail.
Mateman also says he is the real victim because he was threatened and received a lot of hate messages on Facebook because of Sophie’s story.

But Sophie and her mother insist that Mateman knows what he did and that she is not making it up.
“Ultimately, if he wants to live with what he says… Well, we know the real truth, and he also knows what the truth is,” Sophie’s mother told ITV.
