Dogs are incredible animals that offer comfort and support to those who need it the most. Emergency services such as police and fire departments often utilize trained comfort dogs to assist individuals who are traumatized or grieving.
However, it’s uncommon to find comfort dogs in funeral homes, where many individuals are in dire need of support. The loss of a loved one can be overwhelming, and mourners can always benefit from a compassionate presence.
That’s why a funeral home has welcomed a special new team member: Lilo, a Labrador Retriever who warmly welcomes the grieving and provides comfort in a unique way that only a dog can.
The three-year-old dog, Lilo, began her service this month at Soxman Funeral Home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and her presence has already had a significant impact.
“Anna Nesbit, director and co-owner of the funeral home, shared with WTAE: “She has a way of bringing some warmth to a very sad time.
“She looks at you with those eyes, and families feel comforted. You can see them sigh with relief.”
Lilo, officially known as the “Grief Dog” at the funeral home, received training from Perfect Fit Canines Service Dogs. She was part of a litter of eight puppies, all of whom were adopted as service dogs.
When the funeral home owners sought a dog for their establishment, Lilo seemed like the perfect fit.
“She has a very sweet, gentle nature that aligns perfectly with the funeral home’s needs,” Anna mentioned in a live video on Facebook. “After extensive training… we began introducing her to families during services.”
Lilo is not meant to divert attention from the grieving process but to ease some of the tension and overwhelming feelings that can arise in funeral homes, according to Anna.
Within just a few weeks of service, Lilo has already made a significant positive impact on individuals of all ages who are grieving the loss of their loved ones.
Clyde Boyd recalled how beneficial Lilo was at his mother’s funeral for his 95-year-old great-grandmother Agnes Boyd, especially for the youngest children.
“What really struck me was how she interacted with the great-grandchildren, who were very anxious as they experienced this for the first time. Lilo definitely helped them relax and be themselves,” Clyde shared with WTAE.
Anna mentioned that Lilo has her dedicated space at the funeral home, complete with toys and a bed. When off-duty, she divides her time between Anna, co-owner Brian, and his family.
Lilo is truly an exceptional dog, providing comfort and joy to those who need it most: individuals mourning the loss of their loved ones.
