Medical Mishap: Hospital Surgery on Healthy Patient’s Knee

Despite the knee intended for surgery being correctly marked beforehand , the medical team mistakenly operated on the wrong knee.

The incident has been officially reported to IVO (Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Sociale Zorg in Dutch) under the Maria law (Lex Maria).

An error occurred during a knee surgery where the healthy knee was mistakenly operated on instead of the correct one, as stated in a press release by the Västerbotten region.

Following an investigation into the case, it was determined that inadequate communication within the surgical team, poor visibility of the marking on the surgical site, and incorrect anesthesia of the knee all played a role in the error.

The local newspaper VK reported that the originally planned surgery on the correct knee was later performed. However, the unintended operation had unfortunate consequences for the patient’s daily life.

How could such a mistake occur? It seems unbelievable.
