Many seniors rely on their pets for companionship and support in their later years. Pets can be a lifeline, providing a reason to keep going, alleviating loneliness, and even offering assistance when needed.
For James Wathen, his dog, Bubba, played a crucial role in his life, especially during his darkest days. Back in 2014, James, a terminally ill 73-year-old, was a patient at Baptist Health in Corbin, Kentucky. During his hospitalization, being separated from Bubba, his one-eyed Chihuahua, led to both James and Bubba not eating for six weeks.
Witnessing the adverse impact of this separation on James, the compassionate nurses at Baptist Health went above and beyond to reconnect him with his beloved dog, who was being cared for by a foster family at Knox Whitley Animal Shelter.

On October 11, 2014, James and Bubba were joyfully reunited at the hospital, evoking emotional reactions. Deanna Myers, the director of Knox Whitley Animal Shelter, shared on Facebook how Bubba mourned before embracing James, showcasing the deep bond between them.
Following the reunion, nurses observed a remarkable change in James’s demeanor. He exhibited a renewed sense of energy, engaging in activities he hadn’t done before, which clearly demonstrated the positive impact of Bubba’s presence on his well-being.
Baptist Health in Corbin acknowledged the vital role Bubba had in James’s recovery and ensured arrangements were made for regular visits to uplift his spirits.
