Almost everyone dreams of having children in their lifetime. But when you are young, it’s not something you think about.
I remember being a child and having my whole life ahead of me. I thought I was immortal and the idea of taking care of a child was something far ahead of me.
A few months ago, Jason and Emily Kotas had a baby, whom they named Sam. The happy parents had been looking forward to this moment for a long time and were overjoyed with the new family member.
But life wasn’t always so easy for Jason. As a teenager, he had been diagnosed with bone cancer and had a tumor behind one of his shoulders the size of a softball.
Jason underwent surgeries, and the doctors came up with a one-year schedule of chemotherapy and radiation to ensure the cancer didn’t spread.
But first, they warned Jason that the treatment would make him sterile. They didn’t want him to never be able to have children, so they advised Jason to freeze his sperm so that he could still become a father one day.
However, Jason wasn’t very interested. Having children was the last thing on his mind as a sick teenager.
But his parents understood the joy of being parents and wanted grandchildren too. Eventually, they managed to convince Jason to freeze his sperm.
After a tough battle, Jason beat cancer and was able to enjoy a healthy life.
15 years later, he got a job at the same hospital that had treated him before, and he met Emily, the love of his life, there.
Jason and Emily got married, and of course, they wanted to have children at some point. Jason just knew he couldn’t have children anymore. But then he remembered what his parents had him do, 22 years earlier.
Thanks to his parents’ decision, Jason and Emily were able to become the parents of a beautiful little boy.
