Mother makes deadly discovery after 2-year-old struggles to open chocolate egg

Children often admire toys and treats, just like two-year-old Riley Apps from the UK. Riley attempted to open a chocolate egg containing a small toy surprise from the movie “Minions,” but struggled to do so.

Turning to his mother for assistance, Riley’s mother was horrified to find a shocking discovery when she opened the egg, as reported by The Express.

Back in February, little Riley sought his mother’s help in opening the egg, a decision that may have saved his life.

Upon opening the egg, mother Sophie Brown discovered six pills suspected to be Tramadol and MDZ, which are used for pain relief and euthanasia, according to The Express. These pills could have caused the child to slip into a coma or worse.

Riley had consumed the chocolate from the egg and turned to his mother for help in opening the plastic eggshell contained within. It was within this plastic casing that the alarming pills were found by the mother.

“He came running to me and said ‘mama, can you open this for me?’ because he tried and couldn’t. I opened it, looked down, and it contained six tablets. When I saw them, I couldn’t believe it. I wrapped them up and took them to the police. If he had been able to open it himself, it could have been lethal,” Sophie recounted to The Express.

Sophie’s partner, Ian King, had taken Riley to the store to purchase the egg. It was believed to be a product resembling a “Minions” item, but the couple had assumed it was an official Kinder Egg product.

“The product in question was not produced by Ferrero. This is a matter for the police and Ferrero UK has nothing further to add on this subject,” stated a spokesperson from Kinder Egg and Ferrero to The Express.

Sophie is grateful that Riley sought her help that day, preventing a potential tragedy.

“Normally he would just play with the little toy. I’ve always thought I can leave him with this and not worry,” Sophie expressed.

A spokesman for the West Yorkshire Police mentioned that an investigation was ongoing at the time, with the pills under examination. Authorities believe this incident was isolated.

Previously, The Evening Standard reported a case in 2016 where cocaine was found in Kinder Eggs in a pub.

Sophie noted that the police, upon receiving the pills, shared her shock upon discovering the dangerous contents. It is every parent’s nightmare to envision their child unwittingly consuming such harmful substances.

“I just want to warn other parents. They could give it to their child and not think about it, and I just want to urge them to keep an eye on their children when they open the egg,” Sophie emphasized.
