A team of doctors at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, USA, made headlines for successfully conducting a remarkable surgery.
Dr. Vaagn Andikyan, a gynecologic oncologist at the hospital, was shocked to discover a 38-year-old woman with a 132-pound ovarian tumor.
The procedure left a lasting impact on him and his team.
Reportedly, the woman’s tumor was growing at a staggering rate of about 10 pounds per week, according to CNN.
Dr. Andikyan mentioned, “Ovarian mucinous tumors tend to be large. However, tumors of this magnitude are exceedingly rare. This could be one of the top 10 or 20 tumors of this size ever removed worldwide.”
Although technically benign and confined to the ovary, the tumor was pressing on nearby blood vessels, posing a life-threatening danger to the patient.
Recalling the initial meeting with the patient, Dr. Andikyan recounted, “I encountered a malnourished 38-year-old patient weighing 350 pounds with an enormous tumor about 100 centimeters in size – she was filled with fear and desperation after consulting several doctors who couldn’t offer help.”
He further explained, “During the surgery, we extracted this massive tumor originating from her left ovary, the left ovary itself, the left fallopian tube, and the affected peritoneal tissue attached to the ovary.”

Doctors observed that the tumor had severely limited the woman’s ability to eat and walk, putting her at high risk for blood clots.
A positive aspect was that the doctors were able to preserve the woman’s reproductive organs for any future decisions regarding childbearing.
Dr. Andikyan warned that ovarian cancer and tumors, although less common, can be fatal if not detected early.
