Nurses on the Frontline: Fighting Against Corona Without Protection
For four years, Sophie Lopez has worked as a cleaner at a hospital in Los Angeles.
When the COVID crisis hit and wreaked havoc in all American hospitals, Sophie hoped to stay at home. But with two daughters at home, she had to find a way to earn an income to feed them.
On regular days, Sophie cleans the toilets of staff and patients. She picks up the trash and scrubs the floors. She never wondered if people were following hygiene regulations. Nevertheless, Sophie and her colleagues did not wear protective clothing.
“I go to work in my nursing uniform, and in the car, I change into my regular clothes,” Sophie tells CBS.
“When I get home, I go straight to the shower and put my work clothes and regular clothes in the washing machine because I don’t want to keep the contaminated clothes in the house,” the young mother says.
Sophie is one of the many people working on the frontlines in the fight against the coronavirus, yet they remain unprotected.
“We take a big risk. Especially because we don’t know if the rooms are infected with COVID-19 or not,” Sophie says.
