Paws for Success: University Grants Service Dog his Own Diploma for Guiding Owner Through Master’s Program

Service dogs play a crucial role in providing support and companionship to those in need. They not only offer medical assistance but also stand as loyal companions during challenging times.

Recognizing the dedication and invaluable support provided by a service dog, a university decided to honor his contribution.

Brittany Hawley from Wilson, North Carolina (USA) relies on a wheelchair due to complex regional pain syndrome. Through the paws4prisons program, she was paired with a service dog named Griffin a few years ago.

Describing the moment she knew Griffin was special, Brittany shared, “Some dogs were scared of the wheelchair. Griffin immediately jumped into my lap and licked me on the face,” as reported by AP.

Griffin became Brittany’s constant companion as she pursued her master’s degree in occupational therapy at Clarkson University.

Throughout her academic journey, Griffin attended classes, assisted with tasks like opening doors and fetching items, and offered comfort during challenging times of anxiety and depression.

“With Griffin, I felt more independent, social, and extroverted,” Brittany expressed to CBS News.

Brittany and Griffin excelled together, culminating in Brittany’s graduation in 2018. Recognizing Griffin’s integral role, Brittany ensured he was part of the celebration.

Expressing her sentiment, Brittany shared, “We moved to New York together, went to school together, and finished together.”

But Brittany had one special request – she wanted Griffin to receive his own diploma.

“I insisted that if I were to graduate, Griffin should graduate with me,” Brittany emphasized.

To the delight of many, the university honored this request. Griffin proudly walked across the stage and received recognition for his “exceptional contributions to student success.”

“The Board of Trustees acknowledged Griffin’s extraordinary dedication to Brittany’s well-being and success,” stated the university.

“Together, they pursued a degree in occupational therapy, attending classes, lectures, and faculty appointments, making Griffin an esteemed member of the Clarkson Golden Knights family.”

Following her graduation, Brittany aims to fulfill her aspiration of becoming an occupational therapist, intending to work with veterans and military personnel, always with her devoted service dog by her side.

“Wherever I go to work, Griffin will accompany me every step of the way,” Brittany affirmed.
