When Jessica Capitani went for her first ultrasound, she was overjoyed.
Like many expecting parents, she was curious and amazed by the little life growing inside her.
“I thought the ultrasound that day was just to reveal the gender of my baby. I was so unaware and didn’t realize the other reasons ultrasounds are necessary,” Jessica tells Little Things.
Jessica and her husband, Frank, happily posed with the ultrasounds, capturing the moment on a VHS camera.
“We saw the male anatomy on the ultrasound screen. We couldn’t wait to share it with our family,” Jessica remembers.
But within moments, everything took a different turn.
Right after learning the baby’s gender, the doctor indicated the screen and requested Jessica to stop filming.
‘You probably shouldn’t record this,’ the doctor cautioned Jessica.
The reason left her stunned.

They soon learned that Jessica’s son had several complications.
While some were not life-threatening, others were more severe.
The doctor disclosed that the baby would be born with Down syndrome, fluid in the brain, and heart issues.

Initially, doctors were uncertain about the baby’s chances of survival. Jessica was even asked about terminating the pregnancy.
Despite the advice from doctors and worried friends, Jessica opted to proceed with the pregnancy.
The birth was successful, and the family held onto hope for their boy’s survival.
Their son, Caden, was born in 1995 – a name already chosen by Jessica. Caden, meaning ‘fight’ in Gaelic, was a fitting name for the newborn.
Because this boy was exceptional…

Perhaps it was the family’s optimism that Caden would grow into a resilient, healthy boy. He exceeded all medical expectations.
No one believed he would have a “normal” life, but time and again, Caden has defied all odds.
Today, Caden is a source of joy who always sees the bright side of life. He radiates happiness and positivity wherever he goes.
I’m grateful that Caden’s mother trusted her instincts and did everything to bring him into the world. Now, he’s a cheerful, happy boy who brightens everyone’s life.
