Remembering ‘Keeping Up Appearances’: The Stars of the Show, 26 Years Later

Hyacinth Bucket, or Bouquet, as she prefers to be called, always has problems with everyone.

For five seasons, we followed the antics with her husband Richard in the beloved series “Keeping Up Appearances.”

Although it’s been years since the series ended, we still love the reruns.

What has happened to the stars of the series in the meantime?

There are no series like they used to make. “Keeping Up Appearances,” for example. Or MacGyver, The A-Team, you name it.

I still find them as good today as when I first discovered them.

One series in particular always made me laugh.

I’m talking about the British series “Keeping Up Appearances.”

In 1995, the famous series with Hyacinth Bucket came to an end.

Hyacinth was an arrogant, snobbish lady who refused to talk to half of her family.

The British surname Bucket had to be pronounced as Bouquet.

But even though she always thought of herself as better than everyone around her, she always ended up in trouble.

No one could tolerate her behavior, except her very kind husband Richard. It’s been years since the series was on air.

We found out what happened to them after the series.

Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth Bucket)

The star behind the incredible series was Patricia Routhledge.

She appeared on television for fifty years, not only in TV series but also in various musicals and theaters.

On February 17, 2021, she turned 92 and spoke openly and warmly about how much the role of Hyacinth meant to her.

“I am very happy to have played this role. Just because you play a killer in a series doesn’t mean you will actually commit murder. You’re just playing a role.”

Although the series was very popular, it ended after five seasons when Patricia wanted to pursue other projects.

“There was a life before Hyacinth and a life after. If people consider me as Hyacinth, then I can’t help that. If people come to the theater for that, then I can just be very happy,” she told a radio program.

“I wouldn’t want to be Hyacinth my whole life. But it would be wrong of me to say that I’m not grateful for Hyacinth.”

The actress never married and had no children.

Clive Swift (Richard Bucket)

Clive became a very popular actor in England after his brilliant portrayal of Hyacinth’s actor Richard.

But that role was not the only role he played in his long career.

In 1960, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Academy. There, he played the role of Henrik V in “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “Kind Lear.”

He also appeared in the 1981 film Excalibur, where he played the adoptive father of King Arthur.

“The first thing I decided was that if Richard was really naughty and subservient, there would never be a conflict.”

“Because he is subservient to Hyacinth, so the first thing I did was push back. Protest!”

“I lost 98% of arguments with her, so there were no conflicts. But I really had to have the role, otherwise it wouldn’t have been so interesting.”

Together they had a daughter, Rebecca, and sons, Adam and Joe.

In 2017, the family experienced a major tragedy.

His daughter Rebecca passed away from cancer.

Two years later, Clive also passed away. At the age of 82, Clive Swift died after a long illness on February 1, 2019.

Josephine Tewson (Elizabeth Warden)

Josephine Tewson played the role of the very nervous neighbor Elizabeth.

Every time Elizabeth was invited for tea at Hyacinth’s house, she would drop a cup on the floor. It was a scene that occurred in almost every episode.

Although she is known for her role in Keeping Up Appearances, she also had roles in other TV series.

“I continued in the theater for many years, doing comedies, plays, and classics. Then there were roles in TV dramas like “
