A sad update on a recent story: Tater Tot, the rescued kitten who captured the hearts of many worldwide, has passed away.
Tater Tot was rescued in June, born with deformed legs and a cleft palate, needing urgent care. The non-profit organization Kitty CrusAIDe took charge of his care, and co-founder Ash Houghton fostered him at home.
Despite hopes for Tater Tot’s recovery, Houghton shared yesterday that the kitten had “suddenly passed away.”
In a statement, Houghton expressed, “His energy had been declining over the past week and we were treating him with antibiotics for a suspected disease. Unfortunately, he began exhibiting signs of pneumonia, and I started him on medication and a nebulizer.”
She mentioned the possibility of a heart condition, but Tater Tot was too small for testing. Houghton suspects that an enlarged heart may have caused his sudden passing: “One moment he was up and about, the next he was gone.”
“My heart is shattered,” she expressed. “Taking care of this little guy was rewarding even on tough days. I formed a unique bond with him that I’ve never experienced with a foster before. He imprinted his paws on my heart, and hopefully on yours too.”
According to a TikTok video, Tater Tot was first found by a Newfoundland dog named Bebe, his limbs deformed with front legs fixed at a 90-degree angle downward and hind legs “fully curled,” as per Houghton’s comments to Newsweek.
In addition, Tater Tot had a cleft palate, making bottle-feeding challenging, so he had to be fed through a tube.
Kitty CrusAIDe did their utmost to provide Tater Tot with a chance to thrive. He received corrective splints for his front legs and tube feeding. The rescue sought advice from medical experts for a long-term plan, awaiting his maturity.
Meanwhile, Tater Tot’s story spread online, garnering attention through a naming contest that also served as a fundraiser for his medical needs, inspiring people globally.
“I’ve always shared my foster kittens online in various cat groups, but people seemed to really connect with this little guy,” Houghton shared with Newsweek last month. “I knew he was cute, but I had no idea the world would find him so endearing. We were definitely not prepared for the viral attention he received!”
“The world adores an underdog, and this little guy faced various challenges. Many admired his resilience and love for life, truly inspiring. He was a little source of inspiration for me as well.”
Although Tater Tot couldn’t conquer his health hurdles, Houghton wishes his tale will continue to motivate his admirers.
“I hope his resilience during his brief time here continues to inspire people,” Houghton expressed. “Despite multiple health issues, he showed us the importance of fighting on, even through struggles.”
“I want to express my gratitude to all who supported and rooted for him. It was heartening to witness millions worldwide unite over the life of a small being.”
How heartbreaking – rest in peace, dear Tater Tot. Your story inspired us all. ❤️
