A dog, previously stranded on an island, has now found a happy forever home after being rescued and undergoing weeks of recovery.
Trapped on an island
Zaria, a two-year-old Great Dane, got stranded in August on Cranberry Lake in Clare County, Michigan.
She ended up on the island after running away from home and swimming 20 meters to reach it.

Clare County Animal Control worked tirelessly to rescue Zaria, who was frightened and difficult to catch, stuck in a “fight or flight” mode.
Despite their efforts to lure her to safety with food, it took weeks for them to capture her successfully on September 21st.
“We didn’t put anything outside of the cage. She ate for two and a half days in the cage. We set the trap and we had her,” shared Ruanne Hicks, director of Clare County Animal Control.

Zaria’s recovery
Zaria, though in pretty good health, was emaciated from the lack of food. She received small meals at a dog rehabilitation center to help her regain weight.
The recovery process was expected to take several months to a year, and she would be available for adoption once fully recovered.
Finally adopted
An update revealed that Zaria has been adopted into a loving home. The shelter director first fostered Zaria due to having a secure fence to prevent escape.
The foster arrangement turned into a permanent adoption as Zaria, now known as Zara, won over the director’s heart with her friendly behavior.
Thanks to a collaborative effort between shelters and the BISSELL Pet Foundation, Zara found her forever home, marking the end of their “Empty the Shelters” initiative.
What a journey Zaria has been through, but now she is safe, healthy, and loved in her new home!
