Saving the Day: Woman Acts Fast to Rescue Animal in Need

Malissa Sergeant Lewis had an unusual day in August 2016. On that day, she encountered a new friend, a four-legged creature she didn’t expect.

Working at a school in Kentucky, Malissa took a different route to work that day. Along the way, she noticed something peculiar by the road.

Through her window, she spotted a moving plastic bag, raising her suspicions that there might be an animal inside—and she was correct.

Malissa filmed the moving bag briefly with her phone before deciding to investigate further.

Inside the bag was a small black puppy! Malissa recounted, “The bag was tied shut, so I gently ripped the bag open and looked inside. It was a puppy. The little one was so happy to see me. As soon as I opened the bag and he saw the light, he started wagging his tail. He knew he was being rescued. I couldn’t believe it,” to The Dodo.

While there are no photos of the puppy when he was found, he was eventually named Hefty and became an integral part of the family, thriving in his new home.

Simultaneously, the police launched a search for the puppy’s owner. The act of abandoning a small puppy raised questions about who could commit such an act and why.

Fortunately, Malissa’s decision to take an alternate route that day led to the rescue of the puppy. Share this heartwarming story to advocate for animal welfare!
