Selena Gomez found herself unexpectedly delivering a SAG Award acceptance speech when the cast of Only Murders in the Building won at the ceremony, catching her off guard.
Selena Gomez had to improvise her speech
The cast secured the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. With Steve Martin and Martin Short absent, it was left to Gomez, Richard Kind, Molly Shannon, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Kumail Nanjiani to address the audience.
Taking the stage, Gomez expressed her initial surprise. ‘Wait, we never win,’ she began. ‘This is so strange.’ After a hesitant start, she joked about her missing co-stars: ‘Okay, well, Marty [Short] and Steve [Martin] are not here. You know, they actually don’t care about it. But I just don’t know what to say.’ Her co-star Richard Kind suggested she acknowledge Short and Martin.
Following the advice, Gomez said: ‘Oh, and thank you Marty and Steve. They raised me.’ She then expressed gratitude to everyone involved: ‘I am truly so grateful. Everyone, the writers, everyone deserves this. I am taking this home for all of us and I’m taking this to New York for season 5. Thank you so much. I am so grateful! Thank you, SAG-AFTRA. Thank you everyone. I love you.’
