I’ve always held those who care for the elderly in high regard. They diligently look after our parents, grandparents, and deserve appreciation!
However, my anger flares at individuals who stain this noble profession. These wrongdoers fail in their duty, mistreating the vulnerable instead of providing proper care.
Recently, a distressing case of elder abuse has come to light, sparking global outrage.
Salim Youne’s 89-year-old father, a stroke survivor left paralyzed on one side and reliant on a wheelchair, required constant attention. Consequently, he was admitted to a nursing home in Livonia, Michigan.
Suspicions arose swiftly for Salim and his siblings after their father complained of mistreatment by the staff at Autumnwood of Livonia. Despite their inquiries, the facility denied any wrongdoing.
Concern peaked when bruising and sores appeared on the father’s head. Convinced of foul play, Salim and his siblings took matters into their own hands by covertly placing a camera in the nursing home.
“We managed to place a hidden camera in a clock radio near his bed. After a few days … I discovered unspeakable horrors,” Salim Youne disclosed to Michigan Live.
The extent of the abuse shocked the family. Nurses not only verbally assaulted the elderly father but also physically abused him.
Allegedly, the father was denied water, had his call button removed, and suffered violence where his head was shaken vigorously and his legs slammed against the wall while seated in his wheelchair.
The family gathered 119 videos showing unacceptable conduct in just two days. Despite presenting the evidence, the nursing home resisted accountability.
“They didn’t want people to know. They went to court arguing that this had to remain secret,” stated the family’s lawyer, Jonathan Marko, to Michigan Live.
In a bid to caution others and expose the wrongdoing towards their father, the family chose to unveil the shocking footage.

Autumnwood of Livonia confirmed that the implicated employees in the video have been terminated. Salim and his siblings relocated their father to a different nursing facility.
This conduct is utterly intolerable, and it incites strong emotions. Let’s hope this family amplifies awareness, ensuring stricter surveillance in nursing homes, leaving no room for elder abuse.
