Stuart Chaifetz’s 10-year-old son Akian, who has autism, attended a school where he was supposed to receive special assistance.
However, after a year at the school, Stuart observed a change in his son’s behavior. Akian was no longer the cheerful and calm boy he used to be.
Suspecting that something was amiss, Stuart took action.
The school also reported incidents of Akian being aggressive and disruptive – behaviors that were completely unfamiliar to Stuart.
Concerned about his son’s sudden transformation, Stuart sought an evaluation from a therapist to uncover the underlying cause.
Realizing that he needed to investigate further, Stuart made a critical decision.
To uncover the truth, Stuart equipped his son with a hidden microphone before sending him to school.
What he discovered upon listening to the recording shocked him to the core.
The recording revealed Akian being subjected to continuous verbal abuse by his teacher and aides, including name-calling.
After reviewing the entire six-hour recording, Stuart finally understood the reason behind his son’s drastic behavioral changes.
However, the revelations were even more disturbing than he anticipated.
He learned that Akian repeatedly pleaded to see his father, only to be denied every time, leading to emotional distress.
Furthermore, the recording captured inappropriate discussions by the teacher and aide during class, discussing alcohol and sex.
Although Stuart knew the recording might not be used as evidence in court, he forwarded it to the school board.
Subsequently, the teacher and aide were dismissed from their positions, although no further actions were taken.
