The world can be a bitter place at times. Despite progress in putting aside prejudices, they still linger.
Social media might bear some responsibility. It provides a platform for people to bully and ridicule others from the safety of their screens.
A father stood up to internet trolls who taunted his daughter while she enjoyed her birthday cake.
Megan, who has Down syndrome, was covered in cake after relishing her birthday treat. But some heartless trolls insulted her with derogatory names like “Downie” and “retarded.”
Scott, Megan’s father, was deeply shocked by the hurtful comments directed at his daughter. It was Megan’s first birthday.
“My shock turned to anger immediately. I wanted to confront those individuals,” he shared with Metro.
“However, after thoughtful consideration, I chose not to be provoked by such ignorance and spoil my baby’s celebration.”
“Instead, I decided to turn it into something positive and educate these clueless individuals moving forward.”
“I will combat hate by sharing pictures of Megan.”
“Children in Africa are starving, and you’re wasting cake on a child who is too disabled to comprehend it,” read one of the comments.
Scott, a father of five, shared that he frequently hears similar hurtful stories from other parents of children with Down syndrome.
“We hear such heartbreaking stories from other mothers all the time,” he lamented.
“I fail to grasp why these children are perceived differently. It’s beyond my understanding.”
Scott is not alone in this struggle. It’s enraging to know that some individuals mock others for their differences, shielded by their screens.
One thing is clear: they wouldn’t dare if faced with consequences for their actions. That’s why they are nothing but cowardly bullies.
