Every year in the Chinese village of Yulin, a gruesome summer solstice event occurs where thousands of dogs are subjected to torture and slaughter, only to be later consumed by festival attendees.
“Yulin represents a larger issue that numerous Chinese activists are striving to combat,” states director Claire Bass of Humane Society in an interview with The Independent.
Contrary to common misconceptions, the majority of people in China do not consume dog meat and abhor the practice.
In certain regions of China, dog meat is considered a delicacy, leading to the slaughter of about 15,000 dogs annually for consumption. A significant portion of this dog meat ends up being used during the Yulin solstice festival. Most of the dogs used in this trade are strays, with some even being stolen from pet owners.
Inhumane Treatment
To make matters worse, the dogs are not euthanized humanely. They are often brutally beaten to death in groups with clubs before having their fur removed by a machine.
Subsequently, they are subjected to being burned alive with torches.
There is a widespread outcry against these atrocities, with calls for an immediate boycott of the dog meat industry. Prominent figures like actress Judi Dench have spoken out against this barbaric practice, urging for its cessation. However, more collective action is necessary to end this brutality.
