Stray Kitten Found on Street with Still-Attached Umbilical Cord

When Kathryn Van Beek discovered a small creature on the street, drenched by a heavy rainstorm, she was unsure of what it could be.

The tiny, damp furball still had its umbilical cord attached, indicating it was only a day old.

The woman from New Zealand scooped up the tiny being, cradling it in her warm hands. Upon closer examination, she realized it was a tiny kitten.

After checking with people in the vicinity to learn more about the creature’s origins, and finding no information, she decided to take it under her care.

Five days old. I’ve been to the vet and they think I am hale and hearty. Mum and dad will be really happy when I reach my two-week milestone because I’ll be a lot stronger then.

She named the kitten Bruce and together with her husband, they took on the responsibility of nurturing the little one.

“My mother and father think we have a child because we wake up at 2 a.m., give him milk, and argue about who plays the role of parent at that time,” Bruce wrote on Facebook.

Kathryn even brought little Bruce to her workplace in a shoebox so she could feed him through a tube during the day.

Two weeks later, Bruce finally began to open his eyes. By the third week, he was already exploring and no longer entirely reliant on his new mom and dad.
