An owl photo taken in a barn has captured worldwide attention. Swedish photographer Jonas Classon recently clinched the top prize at the prestigious international Siena photography competition.
However, due to the pandemic, he had to accept the award virtually.
“I didn’t have to iron my suit this time,” Jonas chuckled during an interview with our editorial team.
Jonas Classon emerged as the winner in the “animals in their environment” category. His captivating photo of an owl in a barn under the moonlight stood out remarkably.
Out of over 48,000 entries worldwide, it was this owl image that claimed the top spot.

Following this success, his photo was featured in The Times and various international publications including The Sunday Times.
“I capture the best moments in the forest, and this one was truly exhilarating,” Jonas remarked.

Award Ceremony Shift
Nevertheless, the traditional award presentation in Siena, Italy, had to be skipped due to the pandemic.
“The ceremony had to be canceled because of the pandemic, so I’ll be receiving the award virtually for now. I’ll surely collect it in person later,” mentioned Jonas.
“At least I don’t have to worry about ironing my suit now, which is quite a relief. But naturally, it would have been special to receive the award in person.”

What fascinates you the most about photographing the owl?
“I remember every detail. I had been shadowing the owl for a month and had captured many stunning shots. However, on that moonlit evening, I was especially hopeful. Owls and moons create a perfect harmony. Since they are most active at twilight, it added an extra dimension to the photo’s ambiance,” shared Jonas.
